Gallipoli

Gallipoli, overlooking the Ionian Sea, is divided between the village on the mainland and the picturesque historic center on the island. Here, the Baroque style is expressed in monuments such as the Cathedral, the church of San Francesco di Paola, and that of S. Agata. The Greek Fountain, from the 3rd century BC, is the oldest in Italy. Originally inhabited by the Messapians and then by the Greeks, it was important for the Via Traiana towards Brindisi. Under the Spanish rule, many churches and noble residences were built, including the Castle and the Cathedral. Gallipoli is 113 km from Ostuni, reachable in about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car. Among the attractions are the Greco-Roman Fountain, the Castle, the Cathedral of S. Agata, and the Church of Purità.
